Throughout the centuries, Christians have turned to the Blessed Virgin Mary as a loving Mother who understands suffering. Among the many Marian devotions within the Church, one particularly profound prayer invites us to walk closely with Our Lady through the most painful moments of her life: the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows, also known as the Chaplet of Our Lady of Sorrows, or The Servite Rosary.

This devotion gently leads us to reflect on the sorrows Our Lady endured as the Mother of Jesus. In doing so, we learn to unite our own suffering with Christ and discover hope even in life’s darkest moments.

What is the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows?

The Rosary of the Seven Sorrows is a Marian devotion centred on the seven great sorrows experienced by the Blessed Virgin Mary during the life and Passion of Jesus Christ.

These sorrows are traditionally symbolised by seven swords piercing Mary’s heart, echoing the prophecy spoken to her by Simeon in the Temple:

“And you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
(Luke 2:34–35)

Through this rosary, Our Lady invites us to meditate on these moments of sorrow and to console her heart by entering into them prayerfully. At the same time, we are encouraged to unite our own trials with the suffering of Jesus and Mary, trusting that God can bring grace even from pain.

The Seven Sorrows of Mary

The Seven Sorrows Rosary focuses on the following moments in Scripture:

  1. The Prophecy of Simeon
    (Luke 2:34–35)
  2. The Flight into Egypt
    (Matthew 2:13–14)
  3. The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple
    (Luke 2:43–45)
  4. Mary Meets Jesus on the Way to Calvary
    (Luke 23:27–29)
  5. Mary Stands at the Foot of the Cross
    (John 19:25–27)
  6. Jesus Is Taken Down from the Cross
    (John 19:32–34)
  7. Jesus Is Laid in the Tomb
    (John 19:41–42)

These moments reveal the depth of Our Lady’s love and faith. Even in unimaginable sorrow, she remained united to God’s plan of salvation.

The Origins of This Devotion

Devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows dates back to the 13th century, when Christians began reflecting deeply on Mary’s suffering during the Passion of Christ.

In the 14th century, the mystic Saint Bridget of Sweden (1303–1373) helped spread the devotion after receiving revelations encouraging the faithful to meditate on Mary’s sorrows.

Through these revelations, Mary promised particular spiritual graces to those who honour her by reflecting on these sorrows.

Later in history, devotion to the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary was also emphasised through messages received by Berthe Petit, a humble Franciscan tertiary in Belgium.

In 1909, Our Lord is reported to have told her:

“Teach souls to love the Heart of My Mother pierced by the very sorrows which pierced Mine.”

Mary later expressed that the title “Mother of the Sorrowful Heart” was especially dear to her, promising that where this devotion spreads, graces of mercy, spiritual renewal, and salvation will follow.

A Modern Renewal: The Apparitions at Kibeho

In the 1980s, this devotion experienced a powerful revival through the Marian apparitions in Kibeho, Rwanda.

There, the Blessed Virgin appeared to Marie-Claire Mukangango, asking her to help reintroduce the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows to the world.

Our Lady emphasised that many people had forgotten this prayer and that it was urgently needed for conversion and healing.

She promised that those who pray the rosary with sincere hearts while meditating on her sorrows would receive particular graces.

The Seven Graces Promised to Those Who Honour Mary’s Sorrows

According to the revelations associated with Saint Bridget, Mary promised seven special graces to those who faithfully meditate on her sorrows:

  1. Peace within their families.
  2. A deeper understanding of the mysteries of God.
  3. Consolation in suffering.
  4. Help in their needs, if in accordance with God’s will.
  5. Protection in spiritual battles.
  6. Assistance at the moment of death.
  7. Eternal consolation for those who promote devotion to her sorrows.

These promises remind us that Mary always leads us closer to her Son.

Additional Promises from Kibeho

Through Marie-Claire, Our Lady also spoke about the fruits of praying this rosary with sincerity:

  • Hardened hearts can be softened through this prayer.
  • It can help bring freedom from spiritual struggles and harmful attachments.
  • It encourages sincere repentance and healing from guilt.
  • It helps people recognise weaknesses that lead them away from God.
  • Prayers offered through this devotion are powerful when prayed with faith.

Why This Rosary Matters Today

Modern life often brings anxiety, grief, and uncertainty. Many people carry burdens silently.

The Rosary of the Seven Sorrows reminds us that Mary understands suffering deeply. She walked beside her Son through rejection, violence, and death. Because of this, she is a powerful companion for anyone experiencing pain.

Praying this rosary teaches us:

  • how to entrust our suffering to God
  • how to find meaning in sacrifice
  • how to remain faithful in difficult times

By uniting our struggles with the Passion of Christ, we allow God to transform suffering into grace.

Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, dwelling pure and holy, cover my soul with your maternal protection so that, being faithful to the voice of Jesus, it may respond to His love and obey His divine will.

O Mother, keep before me always your participation in the redemption, so that I may live united to your heart which is perfectly joined to the Heart of your Son.
