For centuries, Christians have longed to gaze upon the Face of Jesus Christ, the visible image of the invisible God. In Scripture and tradition, the Face of Christ represents both divine glory and the suffering love that redeemed the world.
One beautiful devotion that invites us to contemplate this mystery is the Chaplet of the Holy Face of Jesus. This powerful prayer encourages believers to make reparation for sins, meditate on Christ’s Passion, and seek the mercy of God.
In a heavily secular world where God’s name is often ignored or mocked, the devotion to the Holy Face offers a deeply meaningful way to respond with love, reverence, and prayer.
What Is the Holy Face of Jesus?
The Holy Face refers to the sacred countenance of Jesus Christ, the human face of the Son of God.
Throughout the Bible, the desire to see God’s face is a recurring theme. The psalmist writes:
“Your face, Lord, do I seek.” (Psalm 27:8)
This longing is fulfilled in the Incarnation, when God took on human flesh and revealed Himself in the person of Jesus Christ.
Christ Himself declared:
“Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” (John 14:9)
During His Passion, the Face of Jesus endured tremendous suffering. It was struck, spat upon, crowned with thorns, and disfigured by cruelty. Yet this same face shines with divine glory in the Resurrection.
Devotion to the Holy Face therefore holds together two great mysteries:
- The suffering love of Christ
- The radiant glory of God revealed through Him

The Origins of the Holy Face Devotion
The modern form of this devotion began in 19th-century France through a Carmelite nun named Sister Marie of St. Peter (1816–1848).
Between 1844 and 1847, she reported receiving messages from Jesus calling the faithful to make reparation for sins that offend God, particularly:
- Blasphemy against the Holy Name of God
- Denial of God
- Neglect and profanation of Sundays and holy days
According to her writings, Jesus said that these sins wounded His Sacred Face, and He desired a devotion that would console Him and repair these offences.
One of the prayers revealed during these messages is the Golden Arrow Prayer, a beautiful act of praise for the Holy Name of God.
The Golden Arrow Prayer
“May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable,
most incomprehensible and ineffable Name of God
be forever praised, blessed, loved, adored and glorified
in Heaven, on earth and under the earth,
by all the creatures of God
and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ
in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
Amen.”
This prayer is offered in reparation for blasphemy, lifting up the Holy Name of God with love and reverence.
The Spread of the Devotion
After Sister Marie of St. Peter’s death, the devotion continued to grow through the efforts of a devout layman known as the Leo Dupont, often called the Holy Man of Tours.
Inspired by the revelations, he placed an image of the Holy Face in his home and kept a vigil lamp burning before it day and night. People began visiting to pray there, and many reported physical healings and spiritual conversions.
Eventually, the devotion received official encouragement from Pope Leo XIII, who established the Archconfraternity of the Holy Face for the universal Church in 1885.
Veronica’s Veil and the Image of Christ
Another powerful inspiration for the devotion is Veil of Veronica, the cloth traditionally believed to bear the miraculous imprint of Christ’s face.
In 1849, during a time of unrest in Rome, Pope Pius IX displayed the relic for public veneration. Witnesses reported that the image appeared unusually clear and luminous.
Copies of the image were later distributed worldwide, encouraging deeper devotion to the suffering Face of Christ.

Blessed Maria Pierina and the Holy Face Medal
Nearly a century later, the devotion was further promoted by Blessed Maria Pierina De Micheli.
As a young girl during Good Friday services, she believed she heard Jesus say:
“No one gives Me a kiss of love on My Face to make amends for the kiss of Judas.”
Moved by this experience, she dedicated her life to spreading devotion to the Holy Face. Later, she helped introduce the Holy Face Medal, based on the image of Christ seen on the Shroud of Turin.
These medals began circulating in 1940 and have since spread worldwide.

The Influence on Saint Thérèse of Lisieux
This devotion also deeply influenced Thérèse of Lisieux, one of the most beloved saints of the modern Church.
She was so moved by the suffering face of Jesus that she took the religious name:
‘Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face.‘
For her, the Holy Face represented the hidden humility and love of Christ, virtues that inspired her famous “little way” of holiness.
Why Pray the Chaplet of the Holy Face?
The Chaplet of the Holy Face is primarily a prayer of reparation.
Reparation means offering love, prayer, and sacrifice to make amends for sins committed against God.
This devotion is especially offered for:
- Blasphemy against God’s name
- Disbelief or denial of God
- Neglect of worship on Sundays and holy days
But it is also a prayer of hope and mercy.
Those who pray it seek:
- Conversion of sinners
- Protection from evil
- Deeper love for Christ
- Spiritual renewal in the Church and the world
By contemplating Christ’s wounded Face, we learn to recognise His presence in those who suffer and to respond with compassion.
Promises Associated with the Devotion
According to the revelations associated with Sister Marie of St. Peter and Blessed Maria Pierina, several spiritual promises are connected with this devotion.
Among them:
- Those who honour the Holy Face in a spirit of reparation console Christ for the sins that offend Him.
- The devotion helps obtain the conversion of sinners.
- God’s mercy is drawn upon the world through these prayers.
- Those who defend and spread this devotion will receive special help from Christ.
- Those who contemplate the wounds of Christ’s Face on earth will one day behold His face in glory in heaven.
These promises highlight the profound spiritual fruit that can come from meditating on the Passion of Christ.
