Most Catholics are familiar with the traditional five-decade rosary, but far fewer know its joyful cousin: the Franciscan Crown Rosary. Also called the Seraphic Rosary or the Rosary of the Seven Joys of Our Lady, this seven-decade devotion grew out of a vision a young friar had of Our Lady, and it invites us to meditate not on sorrow, but on joy.
In this post, you’ll discover where this beautiful devotion came from, why Franciscans and lay Catholics alike still pray it today, and exactly how to pray it yourself, with the full prayers included.

What Is the Franciscan Crown Rosary?
The Franciscan Crown Rosary, also known as the Seraphic Rosary, the Crown Rosary, or the Rosary of the Seven Joys of Our Lady, is a devotion centred on seven joyful events in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Unlike the standard five-decade rosary, the Franciscan Crown has seven decades, each one honouring a different joy that Our Lady experienced. Rather than walking through moments of sorrow, such as with the Seven Sorrows Rosary, this rosary invites the soul to dwell on gratitude, hope, and the tender love shared between Our Lady and God.

Where Did the Franciscan Crown Come From?
The story behind the Franciscan Crown is as touching as the devotion itself.
According to Franciscan tradition, a young novice named James had a lifelong habit of decorating a statue of Our Lady with a fresh crown of roses every day. When he entered the Order of Friars Minor, he was heartbroken to learn that his new religious life left him no way to continue this daily gift of flowers.
Franciscan historian Father Luke Wadding (1588–1657) traced this devotion back to the year 1422, when Our Lady appeared to the discouraged young friar in Assisi. Rather than let him abandon his vocation, she comforted him and offered him a new way to honour her, one crown of roses woven from prayer rather than petals.
Our Lady instructed him:
“Recite one Our Father and ten Hail Marys in honour of the joy I experienced when the angel announced to me the Incarnation of the Son of God.
Repeat these same prayers in honor of the joy I felt on visiting my Cousin Elizabeth.
Say them again in the honor of the supreme happiness that filled my heart on giving birth to Christ the Savior, without pain and without the loss of my virginity.
Recite the same prayers a fourth time in honor of the joy I felt when presenting my Divine Son to the adoration of the Magi.
Repeat them for the fifth time in honor of the joy that thrilled my soul when, after seeking Jesus with deep sorrow for three days, I found Him at last among the doctors in the Temple.
Sixthly, recite the one Our Father and ten Hail Marys in honor of the joy I experienced in beholding thy Divine Son gloriously risen from the grave on Easter Sunday.
Finally, for the seventh time, repeat these prayers in honor of my own most glorious and joyful Assumption into Heaven, when I was crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth.”
Our Lady promised him:
“If you recite these prayers as I have directed, rest assured, dear son, you will weave for me a most beautiful and acceptable crown and will merit for yourself innumerable graces.”
Overjoyed, James began praying the devotion immediately.
A Heavenly Confirmation
Tradition holds that while James was praying, the Director of Novices happened to pass by, and saw an angel standing beside the young friar, weaving a crown of roses and setting a golden lily between every ten roses. When James finished his prayers, the angel placed the finished crown upon his head.
When the Director asked what he had witnessed, James explained his vision of Our Lady. Word of the encounter spread quickly among the friars, and within a short time this devotion had taken root throughout the entire Franciscan family.

Why Pray the Franciscan Crown Today?
Praying the Franciscan Crown Rosary offers several graces to modern believers:
1. Rejoicing With Mary Each decade invites you to meditate on a moment when God filled Our Lady with profound joy, moments that reveal His closeness, mercy, and love.
2. Participating in Salvation History Our Lady’s joys aren’t just personal blessings; each one marks a pivotal moment in God’s plan of redemption, one we re-enter every time we pray.
3. Joining the Franciscan Tradition This rosary is rooted in Franciscan spirituality: simple, humble, and full of love for Christ and His Mother. Praying it connects you to centuries of faith and contemplative prayer.
4. Receiving Spiritual Graces Our Lady promised James that this devotion would bring “innumerable graces.” While the prayer itself isn’t magic, the heart it forms, one of joy, gratitude, and childlike trust, is genuinely transformative.
5. Rediscovering the Joy of the Gospel For anyone weighed down by anxiety, grief, or spiritual heaviness, this rosary is a gentle reminder that joy sits at the very heart of the Christian life.

The Seven Joys of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Franciscan Crown meditates on these seven joyful events:
- The Annunciation
- The Visitation
- The Birth of Jesus
- The Adoration of the Magi
- The Finding of Jesus in the Temple

Final Thoughts
The Franciscan Crown is a gentle, joyful, and deeply consoling devotion. Where other rosaries lead us through sorrow and the Passion of Christ, the Franciscan Crown lifts the heart toward joy, hope, and gratitude.
It reminds us that Our Lady was human too, who knew sorrow more intimately than anyone, also knew overwhelming joy, and she invites each of us to share in that joy with her.
